[ as their conversation continues, hawke keeps finding cole more and more interesting. he's not a mage, or he is a mage? but if he's a mage, he should have said. or... not have said. "not afraid of what i am" he says and hawke's curiosity burns. it's a bit frustrating actually but if varric can call this guy a friend, whatever he is must not be that much of a concern? to... varric, who is a pretty open-minded guy. for now, hawke pays attention to what cole says and what cole does and tries to piece it together with what she knows. that's kind of all she can do right now. ]
I've found that if a person needs help, they'll end up asking for it one way or another. If you want to help with... whatever it is that you are able to do, you'll be able to. It usually works out that way.
[ she reaches out then to squeeze cole's shoulder lightly, feeling she should at least reassure him about that. he seems so desperate in his wish that it makes her feel a little bad. she wonders what he does back home, with varric. ]
Mages aren't very well-known here, are they? I suppose people wouldn't have much need to be afraid then. Ah, either way, I can't let any harm happen upon one of Varric's friends so let me know if anyone gives you any trouble.
[ she'll punch them in the face! it'll be great. ]
[ and then she pauses and at least has the grace to look a little sheepish. that was insensitive, hawke! ]
But I mean, you're quite attractive with... the bandages and all so it's not entirely strange. Still, I'm also very attractive and yet do I get compared to a jewel? No. What am I doing wrong here?
[ ALL I'M HEARING IS EXCUSES. but anyway, she sure did. that's how you accomplish things in thedas. with a rogue, a warrior, and a mage.
but she is a little surprised by the heavy amounts of disdain she's being thrown here though. wow, hiccup. everything was going so nice?? why aren't you impressed by her ]
Maybe I'm missing something here but is there really something terribly wrong with killing things that try to kill me? Should I just have let them eaten me? I had to go through the cave, there was a... ah, witch.
[ The squeeze of his shoulder gets him to flinch lightly, though with the way he looks at her, he's surprised and even looks touched by the gesture. But the eye contact seems to make him uncomfortable, however brief, so he looks down again shyly. He's certainly an odd young man, and it shows the most with how friendly gestures seem to be something he so deeply values. ]
...Yes. I will.
[ Not that he actually feels that he would need to, but he would at least tell Hawke because she asked. ]
But you're right. There are people like mages here. But they're not. Not in the same way.
[Wow, a robot. Jade might have been secretly gathering fonic energy during this whole ordeal, just in case. So he reaches with one hand as if to 'catch' the head, but really he immediately destroys it with a small fonic blast.]
I seem to have that effect on people. [He goes on casually with a smirk.]
I find it to be a very charming title, myself. But if it's far too much for your mouth to keep up with, you can call me Jade Curtiss.
The one they suggested was an "insult cafe." It doesn't sound terribly cute.
[ but she will try her best anyway. spoiler: it won't be super hard. you should still work at the cosplay cafe, kasuu. hawke will visit.
and she really really is! she expected at least one good letter in the bunch and no. was she truly so terrible? of course not! she's great! she's getting kind of annoyed with this. ]
Once in a while I might do a bit of gambling, but definitely not the amount this letter implies. [ that's a lie ] And I have no idea what a red light district is so as far as I know, no.
[ she lives in the slums. that's close enough, right? ]
i just realized they both share a name with a bird
[ hawke raises an eyebrow at her newfound companion and just sort of rolls with it. as long as the people and their flashing lights are gone, she's alright. it's not really a priority for her.
but the man offered to treat her to a drink and now he's looking for the missing person, which isn't really hawke's concern. she reaches over and tugs on his sleeve to get his attention again. ]
How about we just leave, hm? I'm sure we can find good drink elsewhere and the more distance between us and them is a plus for me.
[ she'll start walking again after that, determined to find the exit of this place now. she expects sakamoto to be tagging along now too. a mini-quest to find alcohol! what brave and noble adventurers! ]
Ah, really? They're common where I'm from. Magic, mages, staffs. That sort of thing. Can shoot lightning from their fingertips and other impressive feats such as that. Very handy in a fight.
[ she's a bit worried she hurt him for a minute there but at his expression, she relaxes. she doesn't keep her hand there for long, still kind of baffled by the mystery that is cole but she thinks she's doing things right here, so she'll keep doing them.
for now, she smiles reassuringly. an eyebrow raise at his comment about mages and... still no assurance if he is a mage or not. no, no. he must be. he really must be. ]
No Fade, Templars and face first stumbles into blood magic? [ ah, wait would that be insulting to cole? she's still not sure. ] I mean, that seems a bit exclusive to our world.
[ ah, have a look of surprise at that, jade. she blinks and lets out a "huh". not a mage though? but maybe a mage? he isn't wearing robes and there's no staff.
you know what? she's gonna ask. ]
I assure you, my mouth can keep up with a lot of things. [ hawke, why... ] But, my name is Hawke. Are you a mage?
Whaaat? What kinda customer would go to a cafe to get insulted? That's probably why you end up with so many creeps, y'know.
[But she can work there anyway and he can work at the cosplay cafe and they can do collabs or something! Cute cosplay waiters and waitresses that will insult you for $5, what a cutting edge industry.]
The pleasure quarters! Like, that district off that way- [JABS A THUMB in the general direction of the red light area] -which you totally can't miss. The city's big, but not that big. Plus you have to go there if you wanna visit the shrine or the other gardens.
[But clearly they should commiserate over being slumbuddies instead someday...]
[He just quirks an eyebrow at the 'mouth' comment. Moving right along...]
My, such an upfront question. [He tweaks at his glasses teasingly.] I actually happen to be a fonist, Miss Hawke. I find it quite offensive that you'd make such an assumption. [His tone doesn't sound very hurt at all, though.]
[ The mention of blood magic gets Cole to frown a bit more, since of course, out of the three, this is the one he finds most objectionable. It's a bit more frightening to him than to most, though, since blood magic could bind and enslave him, corrupting him into something he's not. It's... frightening. It's not as often that the Inquisition runs into blood mages, but when they do, Cole is always more hesitant in his fighting.
Though at the very least, it's also something that the people he fights alongside have noticed. He doesn't have to explain, since there's always at least one person willing to focus their efforts there on behalf of Cole. The Iron Bull especially, but Cole knows that it's because he's afraid too. Not in the same way, but fear is fear. ]
...No. I don't think so, at least.
[ He thinks about it for a moment, about the people he had seen doing things like magic, then he adds: ]
They're not afraid of their magic. They don't have to worry about spirits. About demons.
It seems as if these mages caught a lucky break then. No Circles either, I imagine? What must they do with all their free time?
[ but if hawke was pressed, she feels a bit envious of that. all the times she had to move around, avoid the templars, worry after her father and sister... even now, in this place if she thinks of bethany for more than a moment her chest locks up in panic and she wants to cry. that isn't a very hawke thing to do, she thinks and she will just pray to the maker that her sister is safe. she must be safe, she must be.
at the very least, she has this other mage to worry about. it wouldn't be her life if she wasn't concerned about the safety of someone magical, would it? she looks at cole and thinks a little. ]
Have you met many of these different mages? It must be nice to not worry here about that sort of thing.
[ well that's just baffling. how is he offended to be called a mage? sure, mages have their quirks but -- he's a different mage too, isn't he! not a thedosian mage! this guy...
this guy is probably what it's like to talk to her. ]
A fonist. [ it's said flatly and she crosses her arms. ] I have no idea what a fonist is but I apologize for the offense I've caused by mixing up the two. Though you must admit, from an outside perspective -- that did seem quite, well, magical.
