[Theme music. Hawke is the coolest substitute uncle.]
Hehhh... Big coliseum type arena! We may as well go big if we're gonna do this! The crowd watches as the two fights enter the arena, one with a giant scythe and the other with a giant sword. They're meeting to face each other for the first time ever, but it's gonna be a good fight, and the seats are sold out, and then--
[ hawke just nods in agreement because well, there's not much more to say than that! sounds like a good plan to her, honestly. she's not super into the virtual reality aspect of everything but... this is going to be pretty fun, huh? at least it's with ruby.
as they make their way towards the vivid console, hawke does take a moment to consider one other thing. ]
[ hawke just sort of shrugs and starts pressing the buttons on the screen for the console, setting up their match. she glances back at ruby and grins wryly. ]
I was honestly just going to click "random" and hope for the best but if you're not feeling so adventurous, we can go with what we have. That's perfectly fine with me.
[ hawke just points a finger at ruby. ah ha, you activated her trap card ... or something! ]
That's the point. Don't tell me you've never tried sparring in uncomfortable clothing? You'll never know when you'll have to take on the enemy while nude. Or even worse --
And yet there you are! No practice to be found and the next thing you know, you'll be tripping right over your own crinoline and everyone will laugh at you. Ha, ha, ha. But for eternity.
[ this has totally never happened to hawke, but she's heard stories! ]
[ it's a coliseum, ruby! and it's actually exactly like the one in rome but old and surrounded by endless digital ancient rome aside from the fact that, uh, the stands are filled entirely with robots. one half of the crowd is cheering for hawke, the other is for ruby. she was fair.
and hawke is also now in her armor too! and sword! look at all that fairness. they're standing in the middle of the arena, probably way too relaxed than they should be for such an event but hawke doesn't really bat an eyelash at the cheering crowd. this sure is happening. ]
Sometimes, Ruby, you have to do things you're not quite happy to do. Like... wear a floofy dress to make, say, your mother proud -- or at the very least, less naggy. Sometimes you just have to pull up your big girl panties and wear the floofy dress. That's life.
[That resonates more than Ruby would like it to, but she still makes a face. Even if it would've made her mother happy (maybe? She's not sure), she still doesn't really want to wear a floofy dress. Because floofy dresses are the worst--
But she'll deal.
Because she's in her proper clothes, and she can just reach for her scythe, unfolding it to its proper, full size on automatic.]
Well... if I can avoid wearing floofy dresses, I will! For as long as I can, anyway, because I like things like this way more.
[ hawke watches ruby talk and unveil her scythe and for some reason, she finds herself feeling kind of proud of ruby as she does. a smile breaks out on hawke's face and she lets out a short, happy laugh at ruby's words. ]
There is a certain thrill to it, huh?
[ then when hawke catches ruby's eye, she'll gesture for her to take one end of the arena while hawke heads over to the other end. she'll call out rules to ruby as she goes. ]
First to three. No killing. Loser is who gets knocked out of the ring first.
[ she'll gesture to the ring on the ground that circles them just inside the arena. it's like a full proper fight and everything! ]
[There's definitely a certain thrill to it; Ruby's happy to get to spar with Hawke like this, not only because Hawke is a grade a badass, but also because she knows she doesn't have to explain herself to Hawke. Hawke understands. She's the same way, isn't she?
So she just grins, nodding brightly, and readies her scythe.]
On three!
Three...
Two...
One...
Go!
[She's not going to hesitate, either; immediately, she's firing a shot backwards from her sniper rifle to propel herself forward, trying to get herself in range to swing her scythe in a wide arc towards Hawke.]
[ hawke doesn't expect the speed, no way, but it means she's grateful ruby shot first. she's quick with her own sword though, lifting it up and wielding it so ruby's scythe connects with the flat side of the metal. it's a hard hit and hawke's feet skid a little in the ground but you know, she's strong too.
so she shoves back, hard, throwing ruby off of her and she grips her sword tighter with both hands. hawke takes off then, running for ruby, low and while not as fast as ruby, still fast. she's coming in with her sword ready and instead of swiping at ruby, when she gets close enough, she'll slam it as hard as she can on the ground -- making the ground shake terribly and split apart in a line from hawke's sword to ruby's feet.
hawke, of course, still talks through all of this. ]
For some reason, I completely forgot your scythe was a gun! How does that even work?
[Ruby's only ever got momentum instead of pure strength; Hawke's shove sends her tumbling right back, though she's able to twist to land at her feet--and then she's staggering back again when the ground starts to shake. Rather than remaining on the ground for that blow to be a problem, she flings herself skyward with another well-aimed shot.]
It's a high caliber sniper rifle!
[Thanks, Ruby, that explains a lot. But with her added momentum, she's able to swing her scythe in an overhead arc, towards Hawke.]
The other side is the barrel-- Hyaah!--and I can use it for momentum!
[ oh shoot. as ruby flies into the air, hawke can predict what's about to happen next and immediately drops to the ground on her stomach, just as the scythe barely brushes the tips of her hair. maker, ruby is quick and hawke has to be a bit faster to get one over on her.
hawke rolls over to her back, leaping off the ground fairly quickly for someone in her armor. she grabs her sword next and braces herself, eyes flicking around till she spots ruby across from her. ]
Did you think of that yourself or was it something you were taught? Clever bit of ingenuity there, Ruby. Kudos to you.
[ the problem with hawke's attacks is she needs to get in close to do maximum damage. she's not how well that's going to pan out with ruby's speed and agility but she'll try. it's like fighting a rogue, she thinks. hawke's fought plenty of rogues before. she takes off running towards ruby, sword ready to strike as soon as possible. ]
[The scythe's momentum carried Ruby a fair bit past Hawke once she dodged; it takes her a moment to regain her balance, planting her feet and nodding.]
I kinda based my weapon on Uncle Qrow's a little, but my fighting style is still definitely just mine!
[And then suddenly Hawke's running at her and Ruby readies herself, watching her come with as fierce an expression as she can manage--
And then she swings her scythe at what she hopes is the right moment to catch Hawke's sword when she strikes.
We'll see how that goes, it's a work in progress.]
[ ruby's speed and hawke's strength mean that the sword and the scythe clash in midair, locked in a pretty firm deadlock. this seems to just delight hawke, and she grins, feeling pretty good about this. she's going to shove harder with her sword, intending to knock the scythe fully out of ruby's hands with enough strength. ]
You're light on your feet and avoid direct hits. [ another harsh shove here, she's determined. ] Because you're frail or because you're young?
[The shove flings her right back, but Ruby was expecting this this time; she's able to twist in midair, firing a few rounds from her sniper rifle at Hawke this time while she catches her balance. She's pretty sure Hawke will be able to handle a few rounds.
You can do it, Hawke.
And when she lands--]
Well... I'm kinda small, you know? And your sword is bigger than I am.
[???]
Of course I'm gonna avoid it! And, well... my Semblance is speed too, so it's kiiiinda my thing!
[ hawke can handle a few rounds. she takes them in the chest but her armor is surprisingly sturdy and the bullets ding right off. is that magic or the video game, who knows! but either way, hawke just takes a few stumbling steps back and grits her teeth. ow. ]
It is pretty big, huh? [ hawke is proud of her sword, okay. ] And I know you've explained the whole Semblance thing to me before but Maker, it still sounds ridiculous.
[ hawke, you're a medieval fantasy character. get over it. ]
I wonder what mine would be...? Hey, Ruby! Are there any Semblances where someone turns into a dragon?
[ an important question, okay. she asks it as she sheathes her sword on her back and pulls a small knife from her hip. hawke, what are you doing?? she's even just going to pull off one of her gloves now as she makes a slice over her palm. she wags the blood covered knife at ruby then. ]
Because that's totally me.
[ and then she wipes the blood off the blade with two fingers before running it over her nose. after, she tucks the knife away and pulls the glove back over her bleeding hand. she beckons ruby to her after that. come on, attack her. ]
[It's because she's a Bioware protag, she loses a little HP but bullets are no big thing when you can be set on fire and live. Ruby laughs at that, though, shrugging. Semblances might be weird to some people but--]
I think it's kind of weird that other worlds have magic, but I guess it is what it is.
[Shruuuug. Also she wrinkles her nose when Hawke cuts her hand like that. Gross!!!]
But I've never heard of anyone turning into a dragon... it probably wouldn't be a very good Semblance, since people back home kind of train all their lives to kill giant monsters.
[Like.
You know.
Dragons.
She hesitates for only a moment (that was still gross Hawke, now your glove is probably gross!!!) and then she's launching herself forward again for some good old-fashioned scythe-swinging.]
[ the protagonist never dies, ruby. you should know that by now! but hawke braces herself for ruby's incoming attack. that was a pretty gross thing and the inside of hawke's glove is definitely covered in her sluggishly bleeding blood but who cares about that? not hawke. she'll clean it up later. ]
Oh. Then I'm not sure what my Semblance would be if I had one. I'm no mage either, so I guess I've got nothing!
[ but as ruby darts in, what hawke just did with the whole knife and blood thing becomes obvious. she's triggered some sort of inner talent of hers and the closer ruby gets to hawke, the more she'll feel a sudden burst of pain. it'll pulsate in ruby's chest, spreading through her body the closer she gets and hawke just smiles as she watches this. she doesn't even grab for her sword.
see, hawke's a tank but ruby's fast. hawke needs to slow ruby down so she can get a hit on her. hawke does not play fair. ]
Ruby was definitely not expecting it--as soon as there's that pain, she staggers, hitting the ground for a moment before she forces herself back up to her feet, hand clasping at her chest.]
Guh...!
[what the fuck, Hawke, that's cheating.
She's wincing as she looks up at Hawke, eyes narrowed.]
